In the 1918, our grandfather opened his Robert Burns Pharmacy in Beverly Hills at Doheny and Burton Way and our father convinced him to open a soda fountain, launching him in a career as a restaurateur. So it’s with a good dose of sentimentality and nostalgia that we open Bedford & Burns in the heart of Beverly Hills nearly a century later.
Our parents, Elizabeth and Bob Burns opened their first Bob Burns Coffee Shop in North Hollywood in the 1950’s. Soon after, they added the fine-dining Tartan Room next door and over the following years they added to the Bob Burns family of restaurants with locations in Santa Monica, Newport Beach, Woodland Hills and Anaheim. After our father passed away in his late-40’s we (the three Burns “kids,” Beth, Bonnie and Bobby) all got involved in the business and helped our mother run the restaurants. She was a formidable force in the restaurant world and rose to become the first female president of the California Restaurant Association, regularly lobbying on behalf of California restaurateurs in Sacramento.
In 1990, we branched out with a casual gourmet take-away shop and catering company on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. Marmalade Café was a hit and we grew that concept for the next 15 years with locations all over Southern California before selling the majority stake in the company in 2007. Since that time we have been looking for an ideal location to open our idea of a great American bistro. Bedford & Burns draws on the tradition of classic American cuisine in which we were schooled and adds some fresh inspiration catering to the way contemporary diners enjoy eating out.
